Introducing Richmond Cycle Smart

RideRichmond is proud to announce our Richmond Cycle Smart initiative, leading a team of trained and certified cycling instructors to educate one and all on how to ride safely, with a message for both cyclists and drivers.  We partner with VDOT’s Virginia Safe Routes to School program to offer bike training to Richmond area schools, have led a number of cycling clinics and symposia over the past few years for adults and Richmond college-age population, and work with local organizations to develop new educational materials.

School Bike Rodeos

As a partner with Virginia Safe Routes to School, we can teach bike education and conduct safe and fun bike rodeos at your local elementary and middle school.  Let’s get our kids learning early and often and help them develop the skills to ride to school to stay healthy, active, and to make our school areas safe for everyone.

Wednesday May 29th: Bike Rodeo at Pocahontas Middle School from 3:30-5:30.  All kids (and their parents) welcome.

Brown Bag Lunch sessions at your office

We would be happy to lead a quick class on bike commuting at your business or place of employment.  Help your company reduce its parking load, meet its sustainability and health goals, and have a little fun getting to and from work!  We can help your business become a Bicycle Friendly Business!

Classes based on League of American Bicyclists curricula

Our Richmond Cycle Smart team are all League of American Bicyclists-certified instructors.  We can teach basic and advanced classes including information on safe riding, basic bike maintenance, traffic laws, and more.  We can also help you get plugged in to a variety of recreational riding opportunities in the area.

Thursday May 30th: Cycling Clinic at VCU RamBikes (201 N. Belvidere) from 6-8pm.  All welcome.

Public Service Announcements, educational content and messaging

We developed the messaging and content for this series of driver and cyclist PSAs produced by FOX Richmond, as well as helping to plan and conduct the actual filming.

Bike Commuter Mentoring

If you’re looking for some one-on-one help getting started with bike commuting, we can help!  Sign up here to be a mentor or mentee or for instruction opportunities.

On-road Skills Course

We are currently working with the City of Richmond and VCU to develop an on-road skills course at the nail shed on Belle Isle.  This will be a facility for practicing traffic skills in an isolated environment for those not yet comfortable riding on the street.  It will be designed with instructional signs and QR codes to how-to videos so users can learn on their own or with an instructor (email us)!  Renovation currently underway with an expected completed date of mid-summer 2013.

Saturday June 22nd: RVA Streets Alive, presented by Sports Backers.  We’ll have a training course set up to demonstrate road safety procedures, will be taking registrations for bike classes, and more.  Come pay us a visit!
