We are pleased to announce that we got many, very good applications for our scholarship to the Women’s Forum in March, a part of the National Bike Summit hosted by the League of American Bicyclists. The applications were so good, in fact, that we have chosen to send not one lady, but three, to the Women’s Forum!
Before getting into who won, let us take a moment to thank the Coalition Theater (website and Facebook) for their generous fundraising benefiting RideRichmond. Their support has been instrumental in both creating these scholarships as well as our forthcoming Ladies Leader Jerseys for the Bryan Park Training Criterium Series, the Tuesday night race series in Bryan Park which had its 40th season last year.
The inaugural winners are:
- Helene Negler is a long-time Fan resident who has watched the city grow and change, recently taking this notice by bike. She got her advocacy start with the recent Floyd Ave Bike Walk Street discussions.
- Jackie Kruszewski chooses to bike commute sometimes, even though she owns a car and lives next to a good bus line. She monitors bike legislative efforts and serves on the board of Partnership for Smarter Growth but has been searching for an “in” to the bike advocacy world.
- Tessa McKenzie commuted by bike all the time when she lived in Portland but says Richmond isn’t quite as inviting. She’d like to help make it better. Outside of working for VDH, she teaches spin classes at Boho Bicycle Studio to many who feel the same.
We wish we could have sent everyone who applied, and we are excited by the energy all the applicants had for making Richmond more bikeable for everyone. Stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter for our winners’ experiences at the Women’s Forum and for the next scholarship opportunities!
